Lotto Max Background
Lotto Max is a Canadian lottery that started in 2009 (September 25, 2009 to be precise). It now consists of twice weekly draws on Tuesday night and Friday night. One can choose 7 non-matching numbers from 1 to 50 or one can choose a quick pick and have a machine choose 7 random numbers. With Lotto Max, whether you pick or quick pick your ticket, you get two bonus lines (think 2 additional quick picks since they are randomly generated and cannot be chosen) as well.
The grand prize is awarded to the person or people selecting the correct 7 numbers for a given draw.
On draw day, 7 numbers are randomly drawn plus a 8th bonus number. Beyond the grand prize, people can win by matching 3 or more numbers or 3 or more numbers with the bonus number. Prizes range from free tickets to cash prizes. See table below for prizing and odds.
One other thing to note, with Lotto Max, you can opt to play “Encore” for a $1 for extra chances to win. Since it is a randomly drawn number, this site does not spend much time looking into those Encore draws.
Ways to Win and Odds
Matches | Win | Probability |
7/7 | 87.25 % of Pool Fund | 1 in 33,294,800 |
6/7+Bonus | 2.5 % of Pool Fund | 1 in 4,756,400 |
6/7 | 2.5 % of Pool Fund | 1 in 113,248 |
5/7 | 3.5 % of Pool Fund | 1 in 1,033 |
4/7+Bonus | 2.75 % of Pool Fund | 1 in 1,105 |
4/7 | $20.00 Prize | 1 in 82.9 |
3/7+Bonus | $20.00 Prize | 1 in 82.9 |
3/7 | Free Ticket | 1 in 8.5 |
Overall, the odds of winning something on any $5.00 ticket is about 1 in 7.0. In should be noted, that unlike Lotto 649’s 13,983,816 possible draw combinations, Lotto Max has 99,884,400 possible draw combinations. The 2 bonus lines, with each $5.00 ticket effectively drops the odds of winning to a 1/3 of the actual draw combinations. At the end of the day, you are still trying to pick 1 of 99,884,400 possible draw combinations to win the grand prize.
Also, it should be noted that in late spring, 2019, Lotto Max changed it’s format from picking 7 number from 1-49 to picking 7 numbers from 1-50. Although, we have all draw history from before that switchover, this site is only using the draw data since that change. The extra number had a pretty profound effect on our strategy reports. We chose to start fresh with the new format.
